Since returning from a 3 1/2 year stint in Iraq, I have thoroughly enjoyed this LSU season, as it has been a pleasure since returning, among many trials and tribulations once back home. Back in September, after the West Virginia game, I circled November 5th. Now, that date is 2 weeks away, and many like me across the country are going to be scouring news, any news, for the next two weeks for affirmation that their team is going to win. Yes, we will be glued to the next two weeks of Les Miles' press conferences, to get any clue if any of the 3 will be back, or even if more of the players will be disciplined for some boneheaded screw up. We will look for any chips in the stone of He Who I Will Not Name's countenance, and analyze any body language, etc. to see if there is doubt or fear. The Chief will perhaps run 3 offenses at his defense, and Bama defensive backs may want to have standing appointments with counselors after practice to maintain their fragile psyches. The next 2 weeks, there will be no homework assignments in classes that have any importance. The Honey Badger will give a S&*^.

A new day

Hello folks - A long time since I have been around. About 3 1/2 years. Now back home, and catching back up. Snarkiness is setting in, and having to come around to the fact that I may get to watch games in realtime! And not have to wait for the ESPN gametime clock to catch up to a time zone 8 hours away, where broadband can go out at a moment's notice.

Well, Papa is thinking long and hard about coming back home once and for all. I miss live college football, and bitching about Les Miles in realtime is also missed. I want to tailgate, and eat pork! Drop me some lines, folks!

Back on the blog page again

Wow. A lot has gone on since the last blog post. For those of you who don't know me, I am currently in Baghdad, working for a US Government entity, helping the Iraqis rebuild. Life in Baghdad is interesting, to say the least. Life has changed even more. In December, I lost my mother. In May, my father left us to take care of her. My daughter had her first real date. My son is looking at colleges. Sadly, he doesn't factor in the BCS rankings in his selection criteria. I have failed him. I mean, party school rankings and hotness of females on campus have not entered his realm! He doesn't even have one SEC school on his selection list! Or at least he didn't until I forced him to add LSU. Cash supply still speaks to children.

But, the best time of the year is upon us! That is, college football season. There will be some blog posts about Baghdad, my kids' activities, but I open with the top 5 things that make me sad about LSU football this year:

1. Why didn't anyone think to assign a handler for Ryan Perriloux? He's a teenager! He will do stupid stuff! I mean, you think back to the great line from "On The Waterfront": I coulda been a contender
2. Glenn Dorsey is not the heart and soul of the defense this year. LSU seems to have someone on one side of the ball or the other every couple of years that not only has the goods to deliver, but also raises the level of play and intensity of those around him. Think Chad Lavalais, Rohan Davey, et al. Tyson Jackson may be able to step up; let's hope so.
3. There is not a big name defensive coordinator looking to make a name for himself as a head coach; a la Bo Pelini, Will Muschamp, Lou Tepper (sorry, it hurts. His reputation coming in was awesome).
4. The relative strength of the rest of the SEC this year. Sly has had several years to build a program, grounded on integrity. Tubberville is still there. And then, there is this interloper at Alabama.
5. We don't have Ed Orgeron to kick around anymore. Rabid Weasel Nutt is not a suitable replacement. I mean, will he call out his own players to try and whip his ass in the first team meeting?

So, with the situation as it is, I will have to read the Morning Advocate, Dandy Don, LSUBeat, and other blogs such as EDSBS to get my SEC fill. But, I have hours to kill at night, while y'all are in the middle of your day!

Commander's Palace on Washington Uptown. Best Lunch in town for the price and 25 cent martini's. Beautiful location near Zoo and Tulane University. Steak: 1. Dickie Brennan's; 2. Ruth's Chris; 3. My favorite secret place is Camelia Grill on Carrolton Uptown and Jazz Brunch on Sunday Morning at Kabby's in the Hilton at the river on Poydras.

Drago's is one of the top 5 places to eat in New Orleans. It is located in Metairie behind the mall a Veterans and Causeway. Their char grilled oysters are a must.
The Bombay Club on Conti between Bourbon and Dauphine is unique and fabulous food, drink, and service. Skip Ralph and Kacous (spelling) it was subpar.

Reader comments: Dandy Don, I highly recommend the Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter. It is the last locally family owned hotel in the French Quarter and is walking distance to the Superdome. They have a great restaurant and The Carousel Bar actually slowly rotates.
The crescent city brew pub near jax brewery is very good, most of the restaurants within a block or two of bourbon street are also good.
If they want upscale, commanders’ palace, any of the restaurants in the casinos, and Jacque a mo’s ( I probably spelled that wrong) are all very good
The ye olde college inn near Tulane is also good
But let’s face it; asking for a good restaurant in NO is like asking for a warm spot in Barbados

Reader comments: Dandy Don - for people looking for great food in N.O. I have 2 places they MUST go. Both places are off the beaten path and mostly frequented by locals - but the atmosphere and food is unbeatable. Jacques-Imo's at 8324 Oak St. is hands down the best food in N.O. They are only open for diner and closed on Sundays. They only take reservations for 5 or more in a party. Expect to wait an hour or longer to get seated - but the wait is truly worth it. They have a bar and awesome atmosphere for the wait. The next place I recommend is Dick and Jenny's at 4501 Tchouptoulas. Another fantastic place to eat known mostly by locals. Great atmosphere and great food. Both of these places are casual. I promise you I'll be eating at both of these places while I'm down there for the game. Curt Ritchie

You may have heard of this story already, but I think this story deserves the widest dissimination possible. These stories are truly what makes you proud to be a LSU TIGER!! Two days ago one of my patient's came into my clinic to tell me about a little boy named Michael V. Conger. Michael is in St. Jude's hospital battling cancer. Three days ago he received this blog on his web site. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2007 10:19 PM, CST Hey Michael, I recently saw your story and wanted to have the honor to write in your guest book. My name is Ciron Black. I am the left tackle for the tigers football team, im also number 70 and I saw you wearing that jersey number, that's a great number by the way:). You know some people see us as heroes because of how we play but the truth is people like yourself are the real heroes. I see all the small problems I face are nothing compared to the hardships that you may go through. God has a plan for all of us and for some reason he put it on my heart to write you tonight...if it is at all possible I would love to talk to you. My number is #%$^%^&$#% anytime day or night if you need someone to talk to. Hang in there buddy and just know that anything is possible through Christ. Your Friend, Ciron Black P.S. In Memoriam

This has been a very tough fall. Today, it has come to somewhat of an end point, as I buried my mother. She lived a very long life (80), so a little more than the "three score and ten". I shall miss her, but I am thankful that we have no unfinished business, nothing left unsaid. My fellow college football loving blogger friends may find this reference from her eulogy amusing, but only fitting given the locale. I grew up in the extreme northwest corner of Livingston Parish, just outside Baton Rouge. As one may imagine, there's a lot of purple and gold displayed in the area. But, the preacher compared his relationship with my mother to the hill the LSU Tigers had to climb to get to the National Championship game: they never lost faith. He threaded references back and forth, from the ups and downs of her health, to the highs and lows of VA Tech to Florida to Kentucky to Arkansas to Tennessee. And at the end, through the trials and tribulations of others, as well as her unyielding faith, she was granted that ultimate reward - her place in Heaven.

Rest in Peace Mama. I will surely miss you, but will truly be thinking about you on January 7th, as I will all the days of my life. Thanks for the memories.

And in the land of Southern Papa. There has been much activity this summer, as my son has turned 16. Our project has been chronicled at The Bonnie Situation. This has eaten my time, and much of my disposable income. But, teenagers and wheels.

The college football season starts with a bang, delivered by Appalachian State. It must have been the line from the Adam Sandler remake of 'The Longest Yard' where he says that FLorida State would get a tuneup by scheduling some team like Appalachian State and beat the hell out of them. Lloyd must have paid attention there.

Cheerleader's family to sue school district

Teen was cut from junior varsity team and family claims unfairness

YORKTOWN - The attorney for the Billy Fischer family, whose daughter was cut from the Yorktown High School junior varsity cheerleading squad, says her clients have no other option but to sue the school district.

"At this point we are planning on going forward with a lawsuit," said Lisa Duke of the San Antonio law firm of Anderson and Duke. "We have not filed the paperwork yet, but we will soon."

Incoming freshman Wycoda Fischer was cut after tryouts were held for six positions on the squad. Seven girls tried out. The family contends that because an exception was made for the varsity cheer squad, nine girls were allowed on instead of the eight called for in the high school's cheerleader constitution, that an exception should also be made for allowing Wycoda on the squad. The high school principal and cheerleading sponsor approved the expanded JV squad, but superintendent Deborah Kneese ordered tryouts.

The Fischers, Billy and Wysenda, took their grievance to the school board on Monday, but the board upheld the superintendent's decision with a 5-1-1 vote.

According to testimony during the grievance hearing, the varsity was expanded to nine members because the sponsor made a mistake and told eight of the cheer candidates they had made the squad and there would be no tryouts, because it was believed the ninth candidate had withdrawn. She had not, and was allowed on the squad.

Kneese told the school board, "There was an error with regard to the varsity cheerleading tryouts. The decision was made to allow nine cheerleaders on the squad despite the provision in the constitution. The district was not going to penalize the student for its own error. No such mistake was made during the JV tryouts. The mistake concerning the varsity squad has no bearing on the JV squad."

The Fischers' attorney disagrees.

"The school district nor the superintendent has offered a satisfactory explanation as to why Wycoda was singled out," said Duke. "We have no other option but to move forward with the lawsuit."
